Overview

The 2025 ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability and Transparency (FAccT) invites applicants for the FAccT Doctoral Colloquium (DC).

The Doctoral Colloquium is a unique opportunity to engage in substantive interaction with experienced researchers and peers regarding dissertation research and career objectives. The Doctoral Colloquium will be held on June 23, 2025, pending final confirmation of conference dates. It will include mentoring tables and panels from senior researchers on topics related to their work, journeys, and navigating graduate school, as well as other collaboration enhancing activities.

The colloquium is open to any graduate students pursuing a terminal degree (PhD, JD, MFA, etc.) doing research on fairness, accountability and/or transparency (or related topics) in relation to socio-technical systems. We are looking for students in computer science, philosophy, sociology, law, psychology, or any of the broad range of subjects contributing to this area.

In short, if you are a graduate student and interested in FAccT’s scope, the Doctoral Colloquium is for you!

All participants must attend in person. Note that the conference will have a pool of need-based travel scholarship funds and students accepted to the DC will be prioritized for funding.

Applications will be reviewed according to the following criteria:

  • Interest in the DC and articulation of its value to your work
  • Completeness and clarity of application
  • Evidence of interest/work in FAccT-related topics

Applications

Applications should be submitted through the application form, and should include:

  • A research summary describing your interests, progress to date, and future plans (max 250 words).
  • A short statement about how attending the FAccT doctoral colloquium would aid in achieving your career goals (max 250 words).
  • A resume/CV

You may also choose to include other information that you think would be relevant to understanding your interest in attending the doctoral colloquium.

Please note that travel support (i.e., financial aid) will be a separate form, administered separately. Dates for that will be added when available.

If you are not comfortable or able to submit via Google Forms, you may email your application to the chairs at the email below, before the deadline.

Submission deadline: February 12, 2025, AoE

Notification: March 20, 2025

We anticipate filling the DC through the application form above, and students who are interested should fill it out by February 12, 2025 for priority consideration. However, the form will remain open after February 12th as we may create a waitlist for students who chose to attend FAccT based upon paper acceptance and wish to attend the doctoral colloquium. Attendees admitted through the waitlist will not be able to use DC participation toward consideration for funding.

For questions, please email the DC chairs at dc-chairs@facctconference.org.
