ACM FAccT 2022 will be held in the COEX exhibition centre in Seoul on June 21-24, 2022. Our online platform (we are using Hopin) will be open from June 20-27, 2022.
We are committed to the conference being a success for both in-person and online participants. Importantly, we are committed to holding the in-person conference, and will cancel only if public health restrictions beyond our control make that commitment untenable.
ACM FAccT is committed to holding a vibrant in-person conference. However, given the uncertainty associated with international travel, delegates may exchange in-person + virtual registrations for virtual only registrations until four weeks prior to the conference. Requests to commute an in-person and virtual registration to a virtual only registration will be honoured until May 24, 2022 (AoE), with the difference refunded less 10% administration fee. Requests to cancel a registration will be honoured with a refund, less 10% administration fee, until May 24, 2022 (AoE).(GMT).
The last two years have taught us the value of both in-person and online conferences. The challenge for those of us organising conferences now is to find ways to preserve both kinds of value. In the view of the General Chairs, the best way to do this is to deliver online content where the experience of the online audience is centred, and in-person content that is tailored for the in-person audience, with a limited amount of content to be simultaneously aimed at both audiences (true 'hybrid'). Everyone will be able to have a rich and fulfilling experience of the conference—whether in-person or online—but the two kinds of experiences will be different.
In practice, this means that we are effectively programming two conferences. Those presenting research or other sessions should be ready to present their content in different formats for the two audiences. This will involve making additional efforts—paper presenters who choose not to travel may need to be up in the middle of the night to present their work to the audience in Seoul; those in Seoul will need to stay up to ensure they can engage with the audience around the world.
Putting on two conferences also means incurring two separate sets of overheads; this is expensive, but we have been fortunate in the support that we have received, and we have been able to keep registration costs in line with previous years (in real terms, accounting for inflation). We have also prioritised raising funds to support travel grants and registration fee waivers, so that we can support those who would not otherwise have the resources to participate in the conference, and continue to grow the FAccT community.
The FAccT conference organizers seek to foster an accessible and inclusive conference. We recognize that ACM FAccT 2022 attendees have differing abilities to pay, and have instituted a tiered pricing program to accommodate different financial needs.
In striving for a conference cost that is affordable for all, we also have deeply discounted rates available for those registering in countries designated by ACM as "economically developing." To receive the discount code for registration, please be sure to note your country during the CVENT registration process. If you have questions about price or eligibility, please email acm.facct2022@gmail.com.
