The organizers of the ACM FAccT Conference 2021 invite doctoral students in all disciplines (including computer science, statistics, law, the social sciences, the humanities, and education) to apply for the ACM FAccT Doctoral Colloquium (DC). The ACM FAccT DC offers doctoral students doing research on fairness, accountability, and transparency in relation to socio-technical systems with a unique opportunity to engage in substantive interaction with their peers and with experienced researchers regarding their research and career objectives.

The Doctoral Colloquium has the following objectives:

  • to provide a setting for feedback on the research of participating doctoral students;
  • to provide doctoral students with an opportunity to establish a supportive community, including other doctoral students working in related areas or at a similar stage of their dissertation research;
  • to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration on shared research interests; and
  • to support a new generation of researchers by offering advice about publishing and career paths.

The Doctoral Colloquium will be held virtually on Wednesday, March 3rd 2021, from 4pm UTC – 7pm UTC. Full details on the program and format will be shared with participants ahead of the event.

Doctoral students will be selected who have already settled on their thesis direction and who have made some progress in this direction, but still have significant research to complete. Applications will be reviewed according to the following criteria: clarity and completeness of application, stage of research, and assessment of contribution to and likely benefit from participating in the DC. We will aim to be as inclusive as possible, and if we receive too many applications for it to be practical to accept everyone, we will prioritize applications of people from groups that commonly face discrimination or other systemic barriers to professional development.

ACM FAccT registration fees can be subsidized for students whose departments or research groups do not have funds to pay.
