For paper authors, there are two options for disclosing funding sources.

Starting in 2022, authors are required to include an acknowledgment of funding sources in their papers. This is the same information requested in the submission form (see Option 1 below). Authors are, however, strongly encouraged to provide a more comprehensive funding disclosure (see Option 2 below), which will be required from 2023 onwards.

Option 1. Basic Funding Disclosure

The submission form includes the following:

    Funding Acknowledgment (*). Please acknowledge any funding received that directly supported this research, or indicate N/A.

While acknowledgements in general are not present in the text of a manuscript submitted for double-blind review, they must be included in the camera-ready version. The funding statement should be placed at the end of the paper, before the bibliography.

Examples

  • Funding/Support: This research was supported by NewCo.
  • Funding/Support: This research was partially supported by NewCo and OldCo.
  • Funding/Support: The authors declare no additional sources of funding.

FAccT strongly encourages authors to provide a more detailed disclosure, as will be required starting in 2023. For examples of more detailed disclosures, see below.

Option 2. Detailed Funding Disclosure

The detailed funding disclosure includes three elements:

  1. Funding/sponsorship sources, including partial funding.
  2. The role of each entity (employer, funder, or sponsor) with respect to at least the following aspects of the paper:
    1. design and conduct of the study;
    2. access and collection of data;
    3. analysis and interpretation of data;
    4. preparation, review, or approval of the manuscript; and
    5. decision to submit the manuscript for publication.
  3. Financial interests connecting authors to entities that may be affected by the publication of a paper.

Funding/sponsorship sources must include all entities that provided support for the paper (such as funding, sponsorship, provision of materials including data, processing capacity, and other forms of support). If support is provided through a grant having an identifier (such as a grant number), please include that identifier. The entities listed as author affiliations are assumed to provide support and do not need to be listed in this part.

The role of each entity (employer, funder, or sponsor) must be specified for each entity in at least the five aspects listed above. If a funder/sponsor does not have a role in an aspect, that also must be specified. The entities listed as author affiliations must be listed here if anyone, other than the listed authors, played a role in an aspect.

Financial interests should include all entities with whom an author has a relationship, activity, or interest, and that may be affected by the publication of the paper. Authors should interpret “financial interests” broadly. Hence, if you are in doubt about whether to list a relationship, you should do so. A disclosure does not indicate a bias, on the contrary, a disclosure represents a commitment to transparency.

Authors should include relationships, activities, and interests covering 36 months before the date of submission of the manuscript, including:

  • Grants, contracts, or employment, related to either private, non-profit or public entities, not already disclosed in the author’s affiliations or in the funding/sponsorship sources.
  • Royalties or licenses paid; patent applications being drafted, presented, or issued.
  • Consulting fees, speaker fees, expert testimony fees, honoraria, or other payments.
  • Participation in any board, committee, or working group, such as an advisory board.
  • Support for attending meetings and/or travel.
  • Donations or support for purchasing equipment, materials, or services.
  • Other financial or non-financial interests that would lead a reasonable person to believe an external entity to which an author is related may be affected by the publication of a paper, or may have influenced it. The exact definitions of “related”, “affected”, and “influence” are nuanced and context-dependent, and as a result cannot be completely framed.

Authors may include additional details in the funding disclosure that they consider relevant. For any questions about funding disclosure, please contact program-chairs@facctconference.org

Examples

  • Funding/Support: The authors declare no additional sources of funding, and no financial interests.
  • Funding/Support: This research was partially supported by Utopia’s Ministry of Science (MoS) through grant agreement #12345 and a donation of computing time by NewCo. The MoS and NewCo had no role in the design and conduct of the study; access and collection of data; analysis and interpretation of data; preparation, review, or approval of the manuscript; or the decision to submit the manuscript for publication. The authors declare no other financial interests.
  • Funding/Support: The authors declare no additional sources of funding. The legal department of NewCo [note: assume for this example this is one of the listed affiliations of one or more of the authors] participated in the review and approval of the manuscript; and the decision to submit the manuscript for publication. Aside from the authors, NewCo had no role in the design and conduct of the study; access and collection of data; analysis and interpretation of data; or preparation of the manuscript. The authors declare no other financial interests.
  • Funding/Support: This research was partially supported by NewCo and Utopia’s Ministry of Science (MoS) through grant agreement #12345. NewCo provided access to data and facilitated its collection. NewCo and the MoS had no role in the design and conduct of the study; MoS had no role in the access and collection of data; NewCo and the MoS had no role in the analysis and interpretation of data; preparation or review of the manuscript; or in the decision to submit the manuscript for publication. Dr. Trovato served as a consultant for OldCo between Year1 and Year2 [note: assume for this example OldCo can be affected by the publication of this paper, and Year1-Year2 overlaps with the period of 36 months before submission of the manuscript]. The remaining authors declare no other financial interests.
  • Funding/Support: This research was partially supported by NewCo. NewCo participated in the design and conduct of the study; analysis and interpretation of data; and the preparation and review of the manuscript. NewCo had no role in the access and collection of data; preparation, review, or approval of the manuscript; or in the decision to submit the manuscript for publication. Dr. Trovato serves on the advisory board of OldCo [note: assume for this example OldCo can be affected by the publication of the paper, and is not one of the affiliations of the authors]. The remaining authors declare no other financial interests.

At FAccT we are initially modeling our rules on funding disclosures after existing practices in journals in medicine and other fields. We welcome suggestions on how to further improve the adaptation of these rules to FAccT.
